Artist Ward Zaraa wrote an impressive article for the Arabic / English online medium Syria Untold. “As Syrians, we were all in different closets; we didn’t know ourselves and each other. When the revolution took place, everyone came out of their closet. Chaos ensued, but maybe we needed to reinvent ourselves, our names, our bodies, identities and home countries.”
The article is written from a LGBTIQ vision and for that reason it will appeal to a specific group within the diaspora. Interestingly, Ward uses “out of the closet” as a metaphor for war- and exclusion conditions in a broader context. How wonderful that an ‘exceptional status’ can teach us something about all the people that had to flee their country, because of political injustice. So meaningful, Ward.
